Dreadlocks are a phenomena around the world for years now, but how did this started?
In the beginning of the twentieth century, Marcus Garvey started a social-religious movement in Harlem, New York City, USA. This movement had lots of enthusiastic followers in the black population of the island of Jamaica. This group believed in 3 sources: (1) the Old and New testament, (2) the African Tribal culture and (3) the Indian Hindu culture.
The followers of this movement called themselves “Dreads”, with this name they wanted to show they respected God. Just like their Hindu Gods, they grew their hair and after a while it resulted in Dreadlocks, the hairstyle of the “Dreads”.
Quickly after that, these group of people focused their attention on the Ethiopian emperor Ras Tafari Haile Selassie, and that’s where the name Rastafari comes from. But the term Dreadlocks was kept for this hairstyle.
Being a spiritual and religious symbol of origine, the Dreadlocks became a social symbol too. Nowadays Dreadlocks represent spiritual, natural and supernatural powers. They are also the symbol for a non-violent society where people care about the poorer people in the world.
Since the end of the nineties Dreadlocks are worn a lot in western Europe. Some famous actors and pop/rock singers had dreadlocks. Lots of these dreads were artificial dreads, this was a hype in the beginning of this century. When this hype ended, the true lovers of dreadlocks remained and the Dreadlocks of your own hair became more popular.
